Accessible and Sustainable Coaching Practices
Yo can have both.
People who come to my coaching training are overwhelmingly service-oriented. They come to this work to help people. They want to help as many people as possible. They know they aren’t going to make a million dollars, but they do hope their practice can be sustainable.
These two values are both positive, and seem to be at odds with each other. It can seem like we have to choose one or the other.
But we don’t!
This problem is what I like to call “A living question.” It breathes, It expands and contracts. It flows a little bit more in one direction before turning back into the other.
We need both, and we can have both!
We also benefit from recognizing that there is too much of a good thing. Making our work accessible generates compassion, it spreads goodness and healing far and wide, and it makes us feel purposeful. But if we overdo it, without taking care of ourselves, it can lead to burnout, self-deprivation, and even resentment.
Having a coaching that makes money is wonderful too, it’s great to be sustainable and sufficient doing what one loves, but if that’s all that we focus on, we might lose touch with our humanity and become short-sighted.
It takes honesty and awareness to track where we might be in relation to these polarities at any given time. This process is called ‘Polarity Management.’ It was developed by a guy named Barry Johnson to address these kinds of issues in organizations. It shows us how to live in a way that makes space for both/and. We grow in our capacity for hold seeming opposites in a cohesive, integrated way.
It’s one of the tools we practice in our Coaching Training Program.
It’s literally an integration practice. We learn to accept that we have a variety of needs and values, and that we can create an inner state of cooperation. It’s a practice we can extend to our clients. They show up with them all the time. Once you learn to see polarities, you’ll see them everywhere.
Coaching Training starts February 3rd and runs through the end of June. You’ll learn how to work with polarities, paradoxes, and mysteries. You’ll sit in the silence and the weirdness until it feels like home. You’ll delve into your mind, and the minds of your classmates, and come out kinder and wiser for it.
