Coming Down Gently: Integration for Our Whole Being
Supporting Neuroplastic Change with Intentionality
Some of us didn't learn about the importance of set and setting before we started our psychedelic explorations. We discovered it during the journey itself, and maybe doubly so, as we began to come down. Nothing is as achy and uncomfortable as wishing you had a comfortable place to rest after an intense trip and simply not having it. Just like we've heard stories of people buying art supplies after a trip, I've also witnessed people purchase new bedding and new home decor! I was once with a friend who was walking around their apartment, confused by all of their belongings, "Who's stuff is this? This isn't mine. Who was I trying to impress when I bought this? Who is this stuff for?" It was a brilliant moment of insight.
So we know that our body needs a nice place to come down, a comfy place to lay down, and some time to give yourself a little spa treatment. I always appreciate a good salt scrub. The 365 Rose Petal Epsom Salts have a special place in my heart. I had to learn the hard way not to get that black charcoal scrub. I was worried that I would be stuck with a black tub forever! It was hard work getting that stuff off.
All of my senses need things to be softer. Afterward, I might avoid rock music and stand-up comedy, two of my favorite treats, on a regular day. I gravitate towards sacred music, chants, ragas, and isochronic tones. I spend more time in meditation. I spend more time in nature. I spend more time writing and reading high-minded things.
Some of these behaviors come naturally, and some I must remind myself are good for me. We know that psychedelics create critical learning periods of neuroplasticity where we have a chance to develop new habitual ways of thinking or behaving. If we take care of our selves well, there is a greater chance that we'll continue to do that. Of course, we have to be careful and committed because our neurology is agnostic. If we treat ourselves like trash, that will just become more ingrained into the newly awakened parts of our mind.
All the more reason to have strong intentions for our journey and the time afterward.
I could go on, but it just so happens that I'm teaching on this topic for Fungi Academy next week, on October 10th at noon eastern time. It's part of their sacred space holder program, and I'm looking forward to it; it's going to be fun. Join us if you can -> This is the Link.
